What is God telling you to do? Is it to go or not to go? What is important is that Jesus is with you with your decision. If God is on our side, who can be against us?

Hey Mark! Thank you for your comments. I agree wholeheartedly that we need to be acting in a manner that reflects Jesus and that it should be done with the purpose of serving the people we are there to serve - whether long-term or short. I believe that short-term mission trips are a great way to get our feet wet and should always be approached with a humble, learning attitude. I will definitely check out the link to the website you provided and encourage others to do the same.

Thanks again, and stay tuned for more of my "Top Twelve Reasons To Go."

In Christ Jesus,
Lori McCarthy

Sorry - my first comment was messed up - here's what it was supposed to be...!

I agree that short-term trips can be very beneficial to all involved. But on the other hand I wouldn't want to encourage everyone to go on any "mission trip" that they can, as I think there is a lot of potential for damage to be done amongst the community when trips are done badly.

Unfortunately going with good intentions isn't always enough - we need to make sure that we're acting in a way that reflects Jesus and that the trip honours and serves the local church and community. I think when we're talking about short-term trips, the key is really your #2 - to go with a humble and learning attitude.

My colleague Phil has written an excellent post on the subject recently if you're interested: http://www.philprior.co.uk/mylife/2009/08/what-on-earth-are-we-doing-with-mission/
