Back by popular demand…Lori McCarthy!
——————————————————-
To go or not to go, that is the question. Now that you’ve heard all of the lame excuses I’ve used over the years for not going on a mission trip, I thought it only fair that I follow them up with my top twelve reasons why you should go. After all, even though I’ve exposed all of the lies that Satan tries to use to fill our minds with doubt as far as reasons why we shouldn’t go, perhaps like me you’ve lost your initial vision and need just a bit more convincing before you decide you should go. So here I am again, back by popular demand. This time I’m going to lay out my top twelve reasons why you and I should go on a mission trip. After all, there should be more reasons to go than not to go. And besides, I couldn’t pick just ten.
My Top 12 Reasons You Should Go on a Mission Trip:
- To prove to all the naysayers that I can.
- To travel the world and learn about other people and their cultural beliefs.
- Because as Christians, we’ve been called to be a part of the Great Commission.
- Because there are people out there who might perish because they’ve never heard of the name Jesus before.
- Because it’s a great way to make a difference for all eternity.
- Because the need is so great.
- Because it was Jesus’ last command.
- Because it often benefits us more than the people we are ministering to.
- Because God promises you will be blessed beyond all measure.
- To speed up the day of Jesus’ return.
- Because we’re so grateful for what Jesus has done for us that we want to share the good news with others.
- Because when I’m standing face to face with Jesus, I want hear the words, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant!
Stay tuned later this week for reason number one…

Sorry – my first comment was messed up – here’s what it was supposed to be…!
I agree that short-term trips can be very beneficial to all involved. But on the other hand I wouldn’t want to encourage everyone to go on any “mission trip” that they can, as I think there is a lot of potential for damage to be done amongst the community when trips are done badly.
Unfortunately going with good intentions isn’t always enough – we need to make sure that we’re acting in a way that reflects Jesus and that the trip honours and serves the local church and community. I think when we’re talking about short-term trips, the key is really your #2 – to go with a humble and learning attitude.
My colleague Phil has written an excellent post on the subject recently if you’re interested: http://www.philprior.co.uk/mylife/2009/08/what-on-earth-are-we-doing-with-mission/

Hey Mark! Thank you for your comments. I agree wholeheartedly that we need to be acting in a manner that reflects Jesus and that it should be done with the purpose of serving the people we are there to serve – whether long-term or short. I believe that short-term mission trips are a great way to get our feet wet and should always be approached with a humble, learning attitude. I will definitely check out the link to the website you provided and encourage others to do the same.
Thanks again, and stay tuned for more of my “Top Twelve Reasons To Go.”
In Christ Jesus,

What is God telling you to do? Is it to go or not to go? What is important is that Jesus is with you with your decision. If God is on our side, who can be against us?
