“My BFF won’t have anyone to watch the Bachelorette with.”
Translation: “I can’t leave my family and friends behind.”
Ok. We admit that this one isn’t that dumb. BUT, if God were to ask you to pack your bags, go to some foreign country tomorrow, and leave your life behind, could you do it? Most people would have trouble leaving their family and friends behind. Yet that might be exactly what we’re called to do one day.
People are often called to leave someone or something behind to go and fulfill the Great Commission. It can be a lifestyle, a friend, a job, or even a hometown. Jesus called Peter, Andrew, James and John to leave behind their jobs in the family fishing business. “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men,” Jesus said. Immediately, the Bible says they left their nets and followed Him.
Leaving everything behind can be very scary, and it’s easy to come up with excuses not to. Jesus met many people who refused to obey the call because of finances, parents, comfort and safety. Yet Jesus said that those who loved those things more than Him weren’t worthy of Him.
However, for those of you considering just such a thing, I would like to leave you with a great promise from Jesus:
“I assure you that everyone who has given up house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the Kingdom of God, will be repaid many times over in this life, and will have eternal life in the world to come.”
Today if God is calling you, I pray that you’ll have the courage to respond like Isaiah and say, “Here I am Lord, send me.”
